Ways of Telling if You Clench Your Teeth During Sleep

Ways of Telling if You Clench Your Teeth During SleepGrinding and clenching of teeth is quite common and on many occasions will do us no harm. However, when done regularly, it can cause damage to our teeth and also lead to several health issues.

Teeth grinding has several causes, but many at times it tends to be triggered by medical conditions, stress and missing or crooked teeth.

Since it occurs during sleep, it can be tough for people to know whether they are suffering from bruxism or not. Common signs of bruxism include constant headache and sore jaws. Sometimes, a partner might hear you grinding your teeth.

Once we suspect that you are suffering from bruxism, we will look for symptoms such as jaw tenderness and abnormalities in your teeth. Severe bruxism may lead to broken or loose teeth. On top of that, they might end up wearing your teeth such that implants, crowns, bridges, and root canal might be needed. It can also change the shape of your face, damage your jaw, and even lead to loss of hearing.

Preventive Measures

Whether you decide to engage in a sweat session or take a stroll down the beach, working out will help you alleviate the stress, which might be causing your condition. After a dental examination, we will provide you with a nightguard, an appliance that you will fit on the top teeth while you head for bed.

While the night guard will not prevent you from grinding your teeth, it will offer protection to your teeth. Another great way to prevent bruxism is by taking a warm bath right before going to bed. Warm water will help you relax your teeth. If you do not prefer warm baths, then you can always soak a washcloth in warm water and then press the water out before placing the cloth on your jaw. You can also use a heating pad as well for this procedure.
