An oral infection is something you should not ignore. When left untreated, it can lead to a variety of problems. That is why we tell people to get into our office as soon as possible if they suspect they have an oral infection. Unfortunately, there is still time between when you notice the infection and when you get to our office. There are ways to help manage the pain until you see us. Using Stuff Around the House You may not realize it, but there are plenty of things around your home that can help you manage the pain from an infected tooth. Some provide short-term relief and other things will work a little longer. One of the things that you can do is turn to a salt water rinse. Mix a half teaspoon of salt with 8 ounces of warm water. Swiss=h it around in your mouth and over the affected area without swallowing before spitting it out. You can do this as often as you need to help with the pain. Other options include cold compresses. This can help reduce any swelling that is causing the pain. Clove oil is a natural pain reliever. Put a small amount on a cotton ball and dab the area that is in pain to numb it temporarily. Crushed garlic can also create an oil that is said to help ease the pain. Chewing on a clove of garlic can provide relief. When natural remedies do not provide relief, over the counter medications may offer some help. Pain medications and topical anesthetics are available and could help you get through the pain until you see us. Like any medication, it is important not to exceed the recommended dosages. If you have an oral infection you may experience pain. You do not have to live with the pain. Take some steps to provide the temporary relief you need until you get to see us.
